What We Know About Change

n  Change will not stop- it will only go faster

n  No matter how well planned, it will not be trouble free

n  Each of us is accountable to making change acceptable

n  Complex change is typically accepted if enough time is allowed

n  Rapid change can occur if it’s a small adjustment

n  Most people initially resist rapid, complex change


Four Basic Premises of Change

n  The change “trigger” is often beyond the control of the people who experience it

n  The central focus of managing change must be on the people experiencing the change

n  Actions, behaviors and communication are the keys to successful change management

n  To manage change, manage yourself  first, influence others later

n  At multiple levels: personally, professionally, socially and organizationally

Phases of Organizational Change

n  Ending

n  Transition

n  Beginning


Ending

n  The goal of this phase is to understand the change process and the steps needed to move through it

n  Dealing with grief and loss issues

n  “Normalizing” change

n  Communication in the ending phase


Transition

n  The goal of this phase is to regain the expected decreases in productivity

n  Identifying priorities

n  Identifying & minimizing resistance to change

n  Identifying personal strengths, needs and resources

n  Communication in the transition phase


Beginning

n  The goal of this phase is implementing the new

n  Flexibility, focus & attitude

n  Stress management for change

n  Communication in the beginning phase

n  Developing an action plan


Flexibility

n  The ability to adapt or deal with ambiguity

n  The ability to successfully handle several things at one time

n  The ability to prioritize, delegate and provide clear communication


Focus

n  The ability to grasp & share vision and long & short term goals

n  The ability to celebrate gains made

n  The ability to focus on solutions-not reasons for failure


Attitude

n  The ability to be a stabilizing force

n  The ability to take care of oneself

n  The degree of belief that change breeds creativity


Managing Complex Change

n  All elements are needed to effectively manage complex change

n  Without vision-confusion

n  Without skill-anxiety

n  Without incentive-gradual change

n  Without resources-frustration

n  Without action plan-false starts
